Robert Brewer, son of Mr and Mrs Hadley Brewer, is named valedictorian for the 1965 Tripoli Community High School graduation with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Salutatorian finalists Sandra Bergmann and Sharon OConnell both posted 3.94 GPAs. The top 10 seniors and Verla Zander receive citizenship honors. Ivan presents the award.
Denver’s Acker-Matthias American Legion posts outlines Memorial Day events for Monday May 31. Rev Ronald F Fink will give the address at 10 00 am in the high school gym with Rev W Barrack leading invocation and benediction. Denver High School band directed by Vernon Hackett to perform amid parade line up at 9 39 am at Kurtt's store.
The Goodwill bags will be picked up by the Boy Scouts on Saturday May 22. Residents should place filled bags on the curb by 9 a.m. Saturday. Bags were distributed Saturday by the Cub Scouts. If anyone was overlooked they should call Mrs. Harry Juel.
Muriel Byers Kooi of Tripoli notified her poem will appear in the Iowa Poetry Association adult division brochure Lyrical Iowa. Across all divisions 275 of about 3 800 entered will be published in 1965.
Erwin Boeckmann entered Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo Sunday and had surgery on Monday.
Representatives of Waltz Studios, Inc. Des Moines, will be at the Tripoli Town Hall Thursday May 20 from 10 a m to 1 p m with proofs of the children's pictures for publication in future issues of the Tripoli Leader. Parents urged to view proofs and invited to purchase if they wish with no obligation to buy.
A bill passed by the Iowa House would allow the Conservation Commission to issue an unlimited number of deer hunting licenses each year, removing the current fixed cap and letting license numbers depend on the deer population.
War County Bar delegates include attorney rep Ackerman and district colleagues as they discuss Zreme Association matters and local legal affairs during a routine meeting.
Tripoli's Iown team will play in the Northeast Iowa League this summer with opening day set for June 6. A league meeting will set schedules and rules as five teams board, with Fayette possible as a sixth. Local players within 20 miles are invited to practice Friday or Sunday to help build the roster.
Readlyn VFW announces a chicken fry Sunday May 23. Serving runs 4 to 9 PM with chicken at 75 cents per piece or 1.25 dollars for a full portion. Proceeds support post activities.
Rev. A. T. Rollene, longtime Horton Baptist pastor, accepts a call to the First Baptist Church in Hartland Wisconsin after nine years in Horton. The Rollene family plans to move this week.
Bremer County Conservation Commission has approval to set up a county roadside park on a one acre parcel at the corner of highway 63 and Bremer road. Plans include a shelter house fireplace and toilet facilities to be installed this year. Approval came from the State Highway Commission and the State Conservation Commission.
Tripoli voters prepare for a May 25 special election on changing town council terms from two years to four. If approved the five-seat council would seat the top three for four years and the remaining two for two years, creating staggered terms with future four-year cycles. A 60 percent majority is required.
John F. Bahlmann 81 died Sunday at home in Tripoli. Services were at Rettig Funeral Home and Faith United Church of Christ with Rev. E F Pithlmann officiating. Interment in church cemetery. Survivors include widow Anna Bergmann and children Clarence Sumner Lavern Wedemeier Lampe, 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Peers and siblings listed. Born Bremer county August 18 1883 married April 7 1909 then farmed Frederika township before retiring to Tripoli.
Tripoli high school crowned Cedar-Wapsie conference champions at Wartburg College track in Waverly. Darrel Hinrichs led with three firsts and new marks in 100 and 220 yard dashes and broad jump. Ray Buchholz set 440 yard dash and relay records. Dennis Bahlmann and Steve Dettmer also posted top times and distances as Tripoli won eight events and scored 1025.6 points despite 13 new conference records.
Tripoli merchants launch a May kiddie promotion starting May 20 with three bicycles and two $25 savings bonds to five youngsters aged 12 or under. Prizes drawn May 29 at 3:30 p m near American Savings Bank.
Fire crews from Tripoli and Waverly responded to a blaze at the Roy Boeckmann farm two miles west of the junction of highways 63 and 93. Loss totaled $10,000 plus, with the machine shed and several pieces of equipment including a corn picker, tractor, baler, elevator, and hay rake destroyed. Fuel barrels stored in the shed caused the fire. Waverly led the response with local volunteers assisting.
Mows will occur at Wapsie Sportsmen's Park this evening on Wednesday. Volunteers are urged to join the mowing operation and should come out as soon after 6:00 PM as possible.
The Iowa license examining team served 81 persons at the Town Hall in the morning. Licenses issued included 39 operator renewals 26 chauffeur renewals four instruction permits and five temporary driving permits. Also recorded were three driving failures one vehicle failure two instruction permit written failures and one new operator written failure. The team will return to Tripoli Town Hall on Saturday morning June 19.
