Editorial urges licensing itinerant salesmen to fund town streets
The Tripoli Town Council should tax itinerant retailers who sell on local streets to finance curb and gutter and street improvements. Milk, dry cleaning, and food trucks plus peddlers on weekly routes benefit from streets but pay no local taxes, competing with taxed merchants. A license fee would spread the tax load, deter shoddy merchandise, and require financial responsibility, potentially determining whether the street program proceeds.

X Marks the Legislator in Iowa Democracy Piece
The 1957 Iowa legislature ended and critics will quickly weigh in. The piece argues lawmakers are ordinary citizens, not saints or sinners, serving as representatives. Change comes slowly in a conservative state, with reapportionment and tax reform coming when the majority desires it. If you oppose your legislator, vote them out. if you agree, vote for them.

Iowa cattle and poultry markets eye shifts in 1957
Bremer County Extension Director cites April 1 cattle on feed report showing longer feeding times this year. Iowa State College economist Francis A. Kutish expects June market activity with potential heavier grass fed cattle this fall if western moisture remains good. He warns against marketing all at once and urges steady selling over 65 days. Egg hatch for laying flock replacement dropped 23 percent in March and 25 percent for the first three months of 1957, yet Kutish says this will help keep egg prices strong next winter. Turkey hatch remains at a record pace though growth slows. three month totals up 12 percent with varied breed increases and a hopeful sign of fewer incubating eggs on April 1.
