Tripoli Musicians Compete in West Union Contest Weekend

Tripoli high school musicians will enter 34 events in the state preliminary music contest at West Union Friday and Saturday for solo and ensemble performances across vocal and instrumental categories. Winners advance to Newton in late April and early May. large groups proceed to Fayette for the Class C state contest.

Mr and Mrs Lawrence Bockhaus of Frederika purchase a 120 acre farm from the Williams Hen nings estate located southwest of Tripoli. The property lies two miles south and west of town and will be tenanted by Wilbert Hartman who has farmed there six years.

Four Bremer county men will leave Waverly next Monday at 6 30 a m for induction into the armed forces They are Lorain Diercks and Warren Duffy Fairbank Mathias Jensen Plainfield and Warland Koch Sumner Five youths will go to Des Moines next Wednesday for physical examinations.

Bolte Faces Heidemann in Second District Supervisor Race

Democratic candidate H. C. Bolte filed for the 2nd district supervisor nomination against incumbent Conrad F. Heidemann of Tripoli. No Republican candidate. filing deadline passed Monday. Other contests include: Schnadt seeking third district GOP nomination against Notbahn and Schwake. Dems Ganske and Leistikow for the same district. Coroner race features Democrat H. H. Cleveland and Republican O. L. Davis. Sheriff race includes Democrat Harley Ehlert, and Republicans R. L. Schmidtke and Arthur Sassman. Grace Luther League Fourth in Pleasant Valley Loop Tourney

Grace Luther League finished fourth in the Pleasant Valley Luther League federation tournament played Monday and Tuesday at the Knights gym in Waverly. Allison beat them in the semifinals. Clarksville won the consolation final. Teams came from Plainfield, Waverly, Frederika Siegel, Buck Creek and Greene. Funeral Rites Friday At East Janesville For Garl Reynolds

Funeral services for Garl Reynolds, 72, who died last Tuesday, were held Friday from East Janesville Methodist church with Rev. Charles E. Luce officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery Iowa Falls. Casket bearers were Floyd Reynolds David Reynolds Wallace Reynolds Cecil Reynolds Daniel Lahmann and Harold Reynolds. Mr Reynolds was born September 18 1872.

Bremer County Firemen Hold Talks on Association

Bremer County firemen met at the Tripoli town hall Monday night to discuss forming a Bremer County Firemen's Association. Co sponsored by the local department and Chief Gordon W Niemeyer with ISU extension staff. All five county departments except Waverly attended about 40 people, no action taken yet, work toward formation will continue. Bremer County lacks an active firemen's association.

Schumacher Pleads Guilty to Reckless Driving Fined 50

Harold Schumacher, 17, of near Sumner, had a driving while intoxicated charge filed by Waterloo police changed to reckless driving. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge and was fined $50.

Lines Resigns As Tripoli Marshal Seeks Replacement

Lewis Lines has resigned as Tripoli town marshal to return to Waterloo. He has served since Nov 1 after coming from Evansdale where he was also marshal and formerly in the Waterloo force. Council seeks a replacement immediately and he may stay until mid April if not replaced. He plans a New York City trip before a Waterloo job May 1.

Country Club Opens Drive For Members

Greens Meadowbrook Country Club in Sumner launched its 1954 membership drive led by P. M. Sorg. Former members are being contacted for dues as the club plans to complete its transition from sand to grass greens. Five greens were seeded last fall with four more to be seeded this spring. new directors elected include R. E. Schwerin president and C. C. Eichmann A. E. Kroblin Les Lamprecht and H. F. Strumpell.

Winter Returns With Light Snow In Tripoli

Tripoli saw the coldest week in a state that overall faced storms and heavy precipitation. The town reported a low of 16 above zero and 18 above on successive mornings, with a light snow on Wednesday, while the broader region logged up to eight inches of snow and storms. Temperatures mostly ranged in the 40s to 50s with a Saturday high of 58, and rainfall totals included .40 inches midweek and .08 inches later. Soil moisture remains below normal, prompting expectations of a wet spring for crops. Ducks en route north were seen at Sweet's Marsh as large flocks rested during weekend travel.

Fire Department Answers Two Calls In Tripoli

Tripoli fire department answered two calls during the week with little damage. An outhouse burned at the Lee Harris home near two miles south and a quarter mile west of Tripoli around 1 45 a m Wednesday. Saturday afternoon a garden fire was reported at the E A Selek residence in town and extinguished.

Weed Control Meet Set for Tripoli April 1

Bremer county farmers may learn about new weed control methods at a session sponsored by the county extension service. The meeting will be at Tripoli town hall at 8 p m on Thursday April 1 with E P Sylvester an extension plant pathologist from Iowa State College as speaker. He will discuss chemical and cultural weed control practices and offer practical guidance for growers.
