Cattle Price Outlook From Bremer County Extension Director
Bremer County Extension Director reports cattle price outlook steady near June levels for the next two months. Iowa State economist Gene Futrell notes fed cattle prices declined about 3 dollars per hundredweight from late March to early June. The first week of June Chicago average for Choice steers was 26.24 dollars, 1.75 below a year ago. Futrell warns price weakness could arise if cattle are overweight or cow slaughter exceeds expectations. Market weights have run above last year.

Market outlook for cattle in 1966 and summer prices
The April and May 1966 averages for slaughter steers show gains of 18 and 20 pounds over 1965, with more Choice cattle in supply pushing weights higher. Marketings expected above 1965 this summer, mainly in fed cattle, while cows and grass cattle may fall if range conditions are good. Beef demand remains strong but higher beef, pork, and poultry supply could limit price strength. Feeder cattle movement into feedlots stayed heavy early year. Corn Belt shipments rose about one third January-April 1966 versus 1965. Feeder prices held steady since mid-April, with summer demand strong and fall feeder prices forecast $2-$3 above.
