Primary This Year Records Lowest Voter Turnout in 30 Years
Iowa primary turnout fell to 270000 voters, the lowest in three decades, with no governor’s race in either party. Local contests spurred interest, including a record 18 sheriff candidates in Wapello County. Bump edged Woodward for the Republican attorney general nomination by about 4000 votes. Democratic contests linger to canvass in June as Scalise leads Wilson by a few hundred. Lt. Gov Mooty beat Naden two to one for the lieutenant governor nomination. In the U S House races, 6th district Republicans and 7th district Democrats failed to nominate for the Nov 3 ballot, with Merry leading but below 35 percent.
