Don’t Delay Nitrogen Sidedress for Corn, Ext Director Says

Dale Shires Bremer County extension director urges timely sidedressing of nitrogen on corn. Nitrogen can be applied after planting but preferably before plants reach 10 to 14 inches, about 35 days after emergence. Regis Voss of Iowa State University stresses adequate nitrogen for high yields and advises adjusting rates for weeds, crop sequence, and residual nitrogen from legumes or manure. Follow proper application methods to ensure soil sealing and minimize root pruning, noting potential burn from broadcast non pressure solutions but not a major concern with good growing conditions.
