Net Profit Decline Reported by State Liquor Commission
Iowans drank a record amount of alcoholic beverages in fiscal 1961 but the states liquor commission posted a net profit of 10.4 million, down 94000 from the prior year. An audit by state auditor C B Akers notes sales reached 44.3 million while criticising spending on Lewis System stores. Whiskey wine malt beverages and bitters gallonage rose to 2.5 million gallons, up 57000 gallons.
Survey Shows Wide Variation in Board Of Supervisors Pay
A Taxpayers Association survey found wide variation in per diem pay for county supervisors across Iowa. In 15 popular counties, supervisors received an annual salary for all days. others paid only for days in session or committee work. Per diem is now 14 dollars, with last year’s days ranging from 318 in Clayton to 104 in Buena Vista and Pocahontas. The association notes administrative duties linger in some counties, despite an 1948 attorney general ruling that road construction decisions belong to engineers and that supervisors focus on policy.

Road work at county line by day labor crews
Readable text notes road building near the county line handled by day labor crews. It contrasts this with standard county employee work, implying a shift in who performs the labor and questioning oversight or efficiency.
