State Board of Regents to Seek 185 Million Dollar Budget Increase
The State Board of Regents votes to request 185 million dollars in appropriations from the legislature, a 61 million rise and 49 percent over current funding. Increases target 57 percent for UI, ISU, and State College, 16 percent for Braille and Sight Saving School, 17 percent for School for the Deaf. Ned Perrin of Mapleton cautions about public reaction and by proposing a 25 percent rise as perhaps more realistic. The board also adopts a merit system for institutions under its jurisdiction to avoid placing them under statewide civil service.
