In Tripoli Iowa Harlan Bremer twelve son of Mr and Mrs Paul Bremer won the fifty dollar bicycle first prize in Tripoli Hardware winning contest for seventh to twelfth graders. Bremer submitted 154 valid words from Christmas and beat Ronald Hills Ralph Bolte Jr Colleen Weidler Gary Stromer Flora Bell Radar Eunice Meier Janet Chapin Joyce Boderman Anthony and David Bergmann among others as judges M W Bennett and Steve Irving noted many entries failed by using plurals prefixes suffixes or obsolete words. Bremer received the prize Monday December 24 at the hardware store.

Firemen Avert Major Disaster at Oren Larsen Home
Tripoli volunteers fought a possible catastrophe when a chimney caused flames to erupt from the east kitchen wall at the Oren Larsen residence on the edge of Tripoli. Mrs Larsen rescued two children Loren age two and Larris eight months, then notified the fire department. Fire Chief Niemeyer said damages were confined to the kitchen east wall with losses not yet estimated.

Tripoli area saw milder weather with temperatures reaching 41 degrees last Saturday and staying above freezing for three days, offsetting a 19 below dip last Thursday. Melted snow turned to ice creating dangerous driving conditions and Iowa recorded a high highway death toll over the holiday season, with a new annual record of 625 fatalities on Iowa highways in 1951.
