Voters in the Tripoli Community School district backed a 410000 bond to build a new high school and remodel the current building for a hot lunch program. The tally was 636 in favor 67 opposed and 10 spoiled ballots among 713 total votes. The measure passed 89.2 percent.
Tripoli cagers overwhelmed New Hampton 62-53 to reach the semifinals in New Hampton tonight. Ron Henninger led Tripoli with 32 points as Kennedy and Denner added 16 and 14 for New Hampton. Oelwein upset Tripoli later 62-54 in a warmup, Dennis Olejniczak scoring 15 for Tripoli and Ramay 21 for Oelwein.
Mr and Mrs Vern Holm of Denver entertained Sunday evening in honor of their son Jerry who leaves Monday for the Marines. Attending were Mr and Mrs John Fitz of Denver Mrs Don James and Donnie of Waterloo Mr and Mrs Fred Holm Mr and Mrs Willard Holm and Kathleen Mr and Mrs Robert Selck Ron and Brian Mr and Mrs Lavern Tegtmeier Steven and Sidney Mr and Mrs Duane Holm Bradley Spencer and Murray.
Mr and Mrs Otto Pape from Monona and Mr and Mrs August Towne departed Tuesday for Arkansas to visit the Papes daughter and her husband Major James R Markey and family in North Little Rock.
Wapsie Sportsmen's club will build a picnic shelter at the east end of Tot's Lake this spring. Directors and the planning committee will start once weather permits as part of a long range improvement program. Next meeting on March 26 will be Ladies' Night with Lloyd Bailey of the Iowa Conservation Commission as guest. Discussion covered rough fish control at Sweet's Marsh.
A meeting to discuss the proposed Wapsie Valley Community School district will be held Friday night at Readlyn school. Henry Lau, of the citizens study committee, announced the plan and said a brochure with details will be distributed to each home in the area prior to the discussion. All residents of the proposed district are invited.
A life-size plastic torso crafted from actual organ casts arrives at the Bremer County superintendent's office. The dissectable model comprises 20 parts with over 1,000 identifiable structures and textures matching real anatomy. Schools may borrow it from the county office to enhance educational programs.
Readlyn Mutual Insurance association will hold its annual meeting Saturday at 1 p m in the V F W hall at Readlyn. A. H. Matthias secretary says two directors will be elected. Officers include F W Poock president John Hesse vice president Louis Widdel treasurer and Hesse Matthias Poock Widdel Henry Specht Otto Pump and Gustav O Boeckmann as directors.
Waterloo funeral services will be held Friday afternoon for Henry Pries 55 of Tripoli notable as brother of Arnold Pries. He died Monday afternoon near Highway 63 in an auto truck mishap likely from a heart attack. Born October 28 1901 in Bremer county he married Elsie Kroblin in 1922 at Waverly. He worked for Rath Packing Co and is survived by his wife eight daughters four sons his mother three sisters two brothers and seven grandchildren.
Slippery pavements and dense fog led to several traffic mishaps over the weekend with no serious injuries reported. Edward Bennett of Tripoli avoided major harm when his 1957 Ford rear-ended a semi trailer north of the Highways 63 and 57 junction, sustaining about 800 dollars in damage. Bennett and passenger James Keough of Denver were treated for minor injuries at Allen Memorial hospital. The Rev. A C Woodcock, longtime Congregational church minister, slid into the rear of a Waverly school bus east of Waverly, suffering bumps and bruises as his 1939 Ford sustained minor damage.
Readlyn Special report states no candidates were nominated for three vacancies on the Readlyn Independent School District board. Voting to fill two three year terms and one two year term will be held Monday March 11. Victor Happel and E W Matthias terms end this year and neither seeks reelection. A director must replace Dr Carl E Venzke, who resigns. Filing deadline is noon Friday.
Mr and Mrs Harry Buhr Dr and Mrs V G Goebbel and Mrs Cynthia Bishop returned Saturday afternoon from a three week vacation in Florida. Mrs Bishop visited friends in Sarasota and the group spent time sightseeing and visiting the homes of Carl Drape and Robert Lenius in Winter Park Florida.
Mr and Mrs Paul Zabel and Mr and Mrs Fred B Schuldt were Sunday visitors of Mr and Mrs John Ohlendorf and Melvin. Melvin arrived home last Sunday to spend a furlough from the Navy with his parents and relatives.
Bremer County district court clerk Mary C. Loucks announced the March term jurors. The term begins March 11 with Judge C. H. Wild, jurors report March 18 at 10 a.m. in Waverly. Waverly eliminated Readlyn from Class A sectional action at Waverly Monday night by a 79-51 final after building a 45-27 halftime lead. Bremer county peers Janesville Denver and Frederika advanced in Class B, with Janesville routing Oran 75-29 and plans set for Denver Tuesday. Finchford defeated Plainfield 62-49 in the other Class B game as Marble Rock and Allison were slated for Tuesday night games.
Rollis Kappmeyer of Maynard is named manager of Spahn and Rose Lumber Co in Readlyn succeeding Arnold Meyerhoff who becomes assistant manager. Mr and Mrs Kappmeyer and daughter Kathy Rae have moved from Maynard to the Vic Hoppel apartment in Readlyn.
A joint sponsored open house by Lenard Dettmer Biester Felt and Geerlings Feed Mills will be at Town Hall Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free coffee and doughnuts, door prizes, special premiums on feed, and free feed for 4-H and FFA members who register. Geerlings servicemen will advise on feeding problems. Mrs. Anna Slack returns from a two week visit with her daughter and family in Mission, Kansas.
Funeral services were held for Henry John Bieman 83 who died Thursday at Waverly Convalescent Home after a long illness. Grace Lutheran church in charge and burial at Fairview cemetery Denver with casket bearers named. Survived by son William Bieman Frederika and second wife Cary. predeceased by son Walter.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars reports a total of 44 dollars raised in the March of Dimes drive over the past two weeks. Down town business display cards contributed 34 dollars, with the VFW adding 10 dollars. Funds are being sent to the county fund.
Three candidates filed for the two Bremer County Board of Education seats. M. W. Bennett seeks re election from Area 1 covering Sumner and several rural districts. Area 4 candidates Walter Meyne and Theo Stahlhut contest the seat left by Arthur H. Miller. Area 4 includes Readlyn and other townships. Election set for March 11 with the regular school election.
Band Mothers will meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Tripoli Public School. Hostesses are Mrs. Lyman Chapin, Mrs. Lester Gatch, and Mrs. Willard Holm. Band uniforms will be checked for repairs. members should bring a needle and scissors.
Sp 3 Willard Mohling spent two weeks furlough at home and will sail from San Francisco on March 4 to Japan. He has served at Fort Polk, Louisiana, for the past 13 months.
Bremer County Association for Retarded Children met Tuesday night last week with R C Gaard county superintendent of schools as main speaker. He said the group could not be sure of a special education room by next fall. It was announced the picnic table for Woodward school is almost ready for delivery.
The eighty second annual meeting of Bremer County Mutual Insurance association will be held Saturday March 9 at the Town Hall. Officers will be elected and other business transacted. All policy holders urged to attend. President is W H Wobbeking. Secretary Otto Walther, Waverly, announced.
Erwin Neuendorf of Wamego Kansas had surgery Thursday morning at St Francis Hospital in Topeka. His condition is reported satisfactory. His mother Ida Neuendorf is staying with him this week.
Neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kreis Tuesday evening last week to honor Ruth Kreis and Harold Linderman who were married February 23. Card games provided entertainment. Lunch was served by hostesses Mrs. James Kerr, Mrs. Leland Alcock and Mrs. Dean Buchholz.
The Greater Bremer County Committee votes to suspend activity for three years due to waning interest. Officers Thomas LeVake and Floyd Hobbs remain in office. funds placed in savings. 22 members present from Plainfield Waverly Denver and Tripoli. Original goal was county road improvements. most targets met except hard surfacing between Tripoli and Knittel.
Friday noon is the deadline for filing nomination papers for candidates to the Tripoli Community School district board of directors. Secretary Robert H. Kuhrt reminded residents. So far two candidates have filed Walter Lohmann and Lawrence Snelling, who seek seats to succeed themselves. Lohmann is current board president. both were elected last year to serve until the next regular election after the district began July 1. Vacancies are for three-year terms.
Mrs. Alwine Rucker underwent surgery last Wednesday at Sumner Community hospital. She is improving satisfactorily.
