Dutch elm disease spread west and north in Iowa during 1964, with Bremer County the first to report it. Iowa State University extension pathologist Bob Lambe lists 11 other counties affected: Winnebago Chickasaw Wright Webster Monona Crawford Tama Marion Page Ringgold and Decatur. The disease now covers the northern county tier after seven years from the southeast, likely aided by beetles hitchhiking on vehicles and contaminated wood.
