Lamb feeder profits to dip in 1963 says ISU economist

Farm Economist J William Uhrig of Iowa State University says prices for slaughter lambs will rise next year with a 4 percent cut in the number of sheep and lambs on feed as of November 1. He notes higher feeder lamb prices should offset lower slaughter prices, keeping profits for lamb feeders above average but down from 1962. The trend follows mid 1960s liquidation of ewe lambs and flock culling, with a smaller Jan 1 sheep inventory anticipated and 15-20 percent lower slaughter in early 1963, and 4-7 percent below 1962 for the rest of the year. As of Nov 1, 2,486,000 sheep and lambs were on feed in the seven major states, down from 2,595,000 a year earlier. Uhrig emphasizes the ongoing change in production and pricing dynamics.
