Feeder cattle market seen mixed as late fall shifts loom
Bremer County Extension cautions careful buying in the late fall feeder cattle market. ISU outlook specialist Gene Futrell says prices likely decline slightly from current levels with yearling prices down 2 to 3 dollars and calves 3 to 5 dollars lower. Movement into the Corn Belt remains heavy though only about 40 percent of Western cattle have moved by Oct 1. Shipments to the Corn Belt rose sharply in the July-September quarter, while transfers of calves from pasture to feedlots stay strong and are expected to stay high for a few more weeks.

Western cattle feeding outlook to improve in 1966
The report notes lower direct sales and contracts this year with more movement through terminal points and auctions. Winter feed supplies are adequate across Western range areas while winter wheat pasture in the Central and Southern plains will influence calf availability. Early fall rains boosted grazing prospects, with late fall and winter outlook reasonably good. Prices for winter and spring fed cattle are expected to average 1 to 2 dollars higher than last year, though late 1965 may lag 1964 by a similar margin. Feed grain prices should rise slightly, protein feeds may cost less, and feeding profits should improve, especially in the first half of the year.
