State Aid Push Moves Across Iowa Schools
State aid resolutions favoring higher funding for Iowa schools pass in over a quarter of 562 high school districts and 18 county boards. A joint statement cites rising property taxes as the key reason, with estimated increases between 27 and 30 million dollars. Auditor Chet Akers suggests writing off old uncollectible tax bills totaling 1.18 million dollars dating to 1934, while a Tax Commission official disputes some figures as partly inflated by delinquent taxes. The 102nd Iowa State Fair opens in Des Moines with an expected cash value above 18 million dollars, described as the largest in exhibit value and entries. Fair Board Secretary Cunningham notes livestock winnings exceeding 5.5 million dollars, including 2 million in Heretne and 1.5 million in other breeds and horses.
