H Club Fair Opens in Waverly Next Tuesday

The Bremer County 4-H Fair runs Tuesday through Thursday with Dairy Day on Thursday. Five Dairy Day queen nominees from Sumner Readlyn Waverly and other towns will compete. Events include livestock judging, 4-H demonstrations and nightly acts plus a big parade and fireworks. Auction closes the fair Friday morning.

Miller Is Promoted to Corporal in Korea

Cletus A. Miller son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Miller Route 4 Sumner was promoted to corporal while serving in Korea with X Corps. Arrived in March 1953, he is a truck driver and mechanic in the 5th Light Aircraft Section at X Corps Headquarters. Miller a Sumner High School graduate entered the army January 1952 and completed basic training at Camp Roberts California.

Coach Mullen to Lead At Tripoli High School

Mr and Mrs John Mullen plan to move to Tripoli around August 15 where he will coach football and girls basketball and teach mathematics. He was born in Des Moines and educated at Steamboat Rock Boone Moline Wartburg graduating July 17 with a BS in Education. Mrs Mullen, Emmaj ean Aardal, also Graduated from Wartburg. Her father was Wartburg physics professor until his death two years ago.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Observed in Tripoli

Mr and Mrs Bert Buhr celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday afternoon at the Tripoli town hall with relatives and friends. A service by Rev William Goetz followed by a mock wedding readings by Lucy Hay and accordion music by Lynn Wilson. A 530 supper served to 160 guests. The couple wed Aug 2 1903 at Crane Creek with Rev J Herbst. Attendants were Ernest Fink and Bertha Frese. They have two sons Elmer Readlyn and George Denver four grandchildren Allen Readlyn Glenn Baltimore Virgil Denver JoAnn Chicago and one great granddaughter Debra Kay Walter Denver. Out of town guests came from Kenyon Goodland Faribault Minn Lytton Clarion Hudson Oelwein Malvern Readlyn Denver Frederika Waterloo and Bremer.

A surprise gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Bergmann Saturday evening. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Matthias and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Weideman of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Homan and Gladys, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brandt of Waverly, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bergmann of Tripoli. A lunch, brought by the guests, was served.

Flower Show by W.S.C.S. Frederika Methodist Church

The annual flower show sponsored by the W.S.C.S. of the Frederika Methodist church will be held Wednesday August 12 in the church basement. Program begins at 2 30 p m There is a 50 cent charge for refreshments.

Lois JoAnn Niemann Weds Pvt Merlin Borcherding in Sumner

Lois JoAnn Niemann daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Niemann of Sumner wed Pvt Merlin E Borcherding son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Borcherding in a candlelight ceremony at St John American Lutheran church Sumner with 90 guests. The couple and guests traveled from Waterloo Jesup Des Plaines Fredericksburg Tripoli and Columbus. The bride wore a floor length nylon tulle gown with a beaded crown veil and orchid bouquet. She was attended by Lyle Youngtom sister of the bride while James Niemann and Darwin Fritz served as ushers. After the ceremony a church reception followed and Pvt Borcherding will report to Ft Riley Kansas after his current posting at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri.

Schwemm Family Ninth Annual Reunion Held Sunday

Nearly sixty five relatives gathered at the farm home of Mr and Mrs Les lie Vogt near Plainfield for the ninth Schwemm family reunion. Announced officers include Raymond Downing as president and Mrs A C Sommer as secretary for 1954. Committees include Mr and Mrs Martin Schwerrn Mr and Mrs Henry Rogge and others. The group from Chicago Oran Waterloo Fredricksburg Cedar Falls Tripoli Ionia Readlyn and Waverly included G F Schwemm Tripoli the oldest relative and Anne Jolyn Lampe the youngest four weeks old. Five births five marriages and no deaths were recorded.

ROTC Cadet Visits California After Camp Carson Training

Lowell Fink, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Fink, completed six weeks of ROTC summer camp at Camp Carson in Colorado. He then traveled to Alameda, California, to spend several weeks visiting Dr. and Mrs. E. H. Fink.

Arthur W. Fasse, 58, of Waterloo, died Wednesday in Allen Memorial hospital from heart ailment. Funeral held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran church Waterloo with Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhausen officiating. Burial in Midwest Garden of Memories. Survived by wife, daughter Bonnie Jean Story of Reinbeck, son DeWayne, three grandchildren. He was born January 7, 1895, farmed in Bennington township, and served in World War I with the Sunset division. Tripoli Canning Co Inc awarded a U S Army contract by the Chicago Quartermaster Depot to supply canned boned turkey for 150 137 50. The work will begin with the sweet corn pack as new huskers conveyors sorting tables and corn washers are installed in the plant husking room.

Sixth Grade Teacher Boyd E. Kelsey Dies at New Hampton

Boyd Eastman Kelsey aged 53, a former Tripoli native and New Hampton resident, died of a heart attack at home after a recent illness. He served in World War I, was active in American Legion, and worked for New Hampton Municipal Plant. He leaves a widow, two children, his mother, siblings, and many nephews and nieces. The funeral was held at First Congregational church in New Hampton with burial in Graceland Cemetery.

Six Leave Today From Bremer County For Military Service

Six Bremer county men left this Wednesday morning for induction into military service. They are Darrell Sowers and Mervin Buss of Sumner, Gerald Burggraf of Fairbank, John Kurtt of Denver, Dale Strottman and Carroll Hemingson of Waverly. The Bremer County Selective Service Board sent 14 men to Des Moines Thursday for pre induction physicals, according to Mrs Karl Eichler, clerk of the board.
