Walter Leverenz of Sumner pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in district court and received three months in county jail with costs, suspended and paroled to County Sheriff Frank Sager, barred from driving until further order. Glen Husband, also of Sumner, pleaded guilty to possessing intoxicating liquor not correctly labeled and was sentenced to thirty days in county jail with costs taxed.
A attic roof blaze at the Amil Ackman home and family prompted rapid action by the fire department. Alarm to extinguishment took five minutes with chemical spray, preventing major damage. only a small area and shingles required replacement. The house is owned by Frank Rohde of Waverly.
The Fremont cemetery association holds its first season meeting at Mrs. C. L. McCumber's home on Friday April 21 at 2 30. All members are urged to attend and others interested are invited.
Seniors of the Tripoli high school stage their class play The Ghost Bird at the opera house Friday night April 21. Thirteen seniors from the class of 1933 perform a mystery drama under Miss Veryl Sturch with a cast including Andalusia Anderson Will Belmont Tobias Tolliver Thelma Bolte Carl Thomas Catherine Belmont Philip Graham Brad Buckhart Celeste Bella Walker Annie Bloom Jane White Jenkins. The production promises audience suspense from start to finish.
On Easter Sunday Mr and Mrs Chris Heiligman celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary with a 530 dinner. Attending were daughters and sons in law Raymond and Marie McKeown and Donald. Harold Connell and sons Erwin and Orval. Marie Heiligman. neighbors Gus Zieske Hans Burkwalt. William Bany F C Kuhrt Ph Hilligardt Rev Theo Thomas. surprise guests Joe Snelling Marie Ida Franklin Elmer Drape. The couple married in Germany and moved to the area in 1923.
The state department of justice instructed the county board of supervisors to install a police radio set in Sheriff Frank Sager’s office. The move follows a 1931 law requiring radios in cities of 15 000 population or more, with specifications provided for proper installation.
The American Savings Bank continues to operate on its current basis after the holiday. Bank officials await guidance from the state banking department on possible reorganization actions. A bank examiner visited a week ago and filed a report with the state department.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Evangelical church for Mrs. Heinrich Andermann nee Dorothea Tonne who died Friday afternoon at her brother Louis Tonne's home south of town. She was born July 9 1847 in Hanover Germany and immigrated to America in 1868. Burial followed at St. Peter's cemetery. She leaves a sister Louise Bodermann two brothers Louis and Herman Tonne and many relatives.
Funeral services for William J. Rundle who died at his Sumner home died of heart trouble were held at his late home. Interment followed in Wilson Grove cemetery. Rundle was born December 6 1862 in Dodgeville Wisconsin and married Hanna Worden on March 17 1889. He is survived by his widow four children a brother and three sisters.
Tripoli Canning corporation officers meet and decide to operate again this season. Contracts are being made for sweet corn acreage, but only a small amount due to unsettled market conditions. The past weeks show revival in prices but still below production costs. Two carloads have shipped recently and another car is prepped. Planting time nears. potential growers should contact company officials promptly.
The cement slabs on Primary 59 are due to start next week if weather permits. Crews report for work Monday April 24 with machinery ready and local two-shift crews on site. State Highway Commission and the contracted construction firm are prepared. detour is routed via Tripoli.
Waterloo hosts the Third District Iowa American Legion and Auxiliary conference on Tuesday April 25 with expected record attendance. Sessions will cover veteran legislation under the economy bill and future stance toward President Roosevelt and Congress. A banquet at 6 45 p m features state officers and district leaders with entertainment and a dance.
Enthusiastic kitten tenball fans met at the Town Hall to form a city kittenball league of four teams for the coming season. Dues set at 25 cents per player. Russell Meyers chaired meeting Lee O Peacock secretary.
Relatives honored Mrs Louis Neuendorf with a Sunday afternoon surprise party marking her birthday anniversary. Guests from Waverly Waterloo Charles City and local families attended and a 5 30 birthday supper was served.
Waverly Post No 176 of the American Legion will stage a stag party on Thursday April 26 at 8 15 PM in the Legion hall Waverly. Invitations go to Bock haus Bartels post members and other county posts. The program includes entertainment and lunch urging all legionnaires to attend.
Mrs Dorothea Schuknecht a long time resident of the county died at home Friday morning April 15 from heart trouble and complications She was born in Germany August 26 1856 came to the United States as a child lived in Illinois before moving to Denver Iowa She is survived by four daughters two sons a brother seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren Funeral services were held at her home and St Pauls Lutheran church with burial in Harlington Cemetery The Birthday Circle Club attended in a body
Fred Donath 56 formerly of this city died at home in Waterloo on Thursday evening April 14 due to carcinoma. He was born in Germany December 13 1876 and came to America February 3 1895. Survived by widow three sons Otto Fred Walter all of Waterloo two daughters Louise at home Mrs Helen Lutz Lamont Mrs Ellen Ohlendorf Waverly Mrs Fred Chambers Waterloo Mrs John Wilson Waterloo and Mrs Emma Pauley Vinton. Also three sisters Mrs John Dornbush Horton Mrs August Ziehe Villisca and Mrs Amelia Templen Waverly plus fifteen grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Frank Fettkether celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary April 8 at home with children and friends. They were married in Dubuque April 8 1875 and moved to Bremer county in 1881 later settling in Waverly. They are parents of ten children, all living.
Alfred Soldwisch of Independence married Emily Janke of Independence at the Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon April 16. Rev. A H Bellinger officiated. Attendants were Ellen Bruhn of Chicago and Bernice Martin of Independence. The bride’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Janke and the groom’s are Mr. and Mrs. George Soldwisch.
Paul Hart announces the Marshall Canning Company will contract 1800 acres of sweet corn this year and 100 acres of green beans 50 acres of wax beans and 100 acres of cucumbers. Mr and Mrs C V Pickard move to Hampton where he becomes general foreman of the Marshall Canning plant there after six years at the local plant. Dr Charles H Stauffacher from Cleveland Ohio field secretary of the missions board of the Evangelical church gave an interesting talk.
