Leadville Colorado reports a violent clash between mine rioters and state militia. Five men killed during explosions and gunfire at Coronado and Emmett mines. militia deployed with orders to restore calm as authorities seek to end the uprising.
In Leadville on September 21, a miners strike attack on the Coronado and Emmets mines caused at least three deaths and multiple injuries. Flames and dynamite destroyed the Coronado engine house and several dwellings as rioters fought fire crews and residents, with police and volunteers defending the area.
Telegraph dispatch from Vice Consul Khourt by Heyrout Syria informs that Thomas J Gibson, U S consul at Beyrout, died of smallpox He was a native of Augusta Georgia appointed in 1893 He had edited the Augusta Evening News and graduated from the Georgia university.
Western Populist leader Georges F Washburn departed for St Louis for a conference with Thomas Watson the presidential candidate and other leaders. The meeting is expected to occur the next day and details were not disclosed. Charleston business shows continued improvement.
William J. Bryan spoke at Dover and Wilmington Del crowds about tariff policy and gold standard. He cited Bismarck and McKinley era prosperity while urging financial legislation aligned with free coinage. Excursion trains brought attendees from across Delaware and Maryland eastern shore. P Green Texas Republican chairman told Babcock in New York that Texas is strong ground for Republicans with fusion underway among Populists and gold Democrats. He notes Populists outnumber silver Democrats in parts of Texas and predicts winning at least five U S House seats If fusion succeeds, McKinley Watson electors discussed.
Princess Olga of Montenegro niece of Nicholas I. dies in Venice at age 62. Born in Cettigne on March 19, 1859, she was not married.
Mary Dolan of Portland fell from a Champooge bridge near Oregon City on Saturday night and was killed. Herman Graf, also of Portland, was fatally wounded by an accidental discharge while handling a gun.
Steve O Donnell defeats Frank Slavin in the fifth round at the Empire Athletic Club Masxper night. Slavin, favorite at two to one, suffers cuts and a back injury rumor before the finish. Referee Hurst stops the bout with Slavin badly beaten and O Donnell awarded the win. Slavin seeks a rematch claiming a back injury affected the outcome.
Eugene V Debs addressed the biennial convention of railway men in Galveston Texas asking for an audience. After a robust Q and A session from 4 30 to 7 p m a resolution to exonerate Debs was offered and passed unanimously.
Milan dispatch says the Italian flying squadron sails for the Levant as the first move to force the sultan to grant Armenia reforms. If the sultan refuses, he faces deposition. Rome reports Italian ships will cooperate with Britain and the United States.
Havana reports a detachment of gen darmes wounded and captured insurgent Colonel Sanchez during fighting in Matanzas. Dispatch from Cardenas notes Francisco Tolon, brother of Samuel Tolon, and four men were sent to Zamfarrin Islands with named officers. Jose Megilla, a lawyer, was arrested on a political charge.
In Oakland Oregon on a Saturday night Sutherland George Nolton and Henry Bruso visited James Brown's home for supper. Nolton urged Brown to give the baby a drink and a quarrel followed when Bruso objected. Brown ordered them out, the dispute resumed. Sutherland swung a club striking Bruso on the head and fracturing his skull fatally.
The Hodgman Rubber Company on Broadway at Grand Street passed into the hands of receiver R W Todd this afternoon amid a tight money market. Stringent credit conditions contributed to the failure as creditors seek recovery.
North Yakima merchants kept stores open to attract Indian hop pickers despite protests from preachers and spotters. Fights erupted with spotters ejected from several shops and warrants issued for nine merchants and Dan Rosenfeld for assault. Locals express support for the merchants as tensions rise.
Toledo, Sept. 20. Whitecaps allegedly abducted and beat Huntsman of Holland Station, then buried him in a grave twice before digging him up amid threats against his family. Two Huntsman children were lashed after being accused of stealing a pocketbook. The incident reportedly occurred around midnight and the victims are described as a respectable farmer and his household.
