Strike Ends Near Hazelton as Thousands Return to Work

In Hazelton Pennsylvania the anthracite coal strike winds down with about 5000 workers returning or poised to return to 12 early mines of Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre and Pardee's Latimer districts. About 500 remain out with leaders noting few concessions granted. Warrants were served on Sheriff Martin and deputies as troops maintained order. gradual troop withdrawal will be discussed tomorrow.

Union Veteran Legion Encampment To Open In Columbus

The 12th national encampment of the Union Veteran Legion opens in Columbus Ohio for four days with a reception for national officers and a Chickamauga week reunion by the Society of the Army of the Cumberland. Authorities expect 20000 to 30000 visitors. the group formed in Pittsburg 1884 and now has many encampments across 21 states plus DC. Bank of England Considers Silver Use Amid Global Talks

London reports at the Bank of England semi annual meeting the governor cited proposals from the United States and France to boost silver usage without altering the gold standard. Drowning of James Callahan in Lake Coeur d'Alene

On September 18 James Callahan of Ballard Washington and FE G Dime of Harrison went fishing in a small rowboat on Lake Coeur d Alene. A mile from shore their boat capsized and Callahan drowned while Dime reached safety, aided by his swimming. Dime is an athlete with one leg.

David E. Brown of Port Townsend crossed Chilkoot pass from Dyea to Lake Bennett in nine days after leaving August 29. The trail time Dyea to Jake Bennett was 45 hours. He hauled 350 pounds with two Indians contracted at 38 cents per pound, later forced to honor the original price at Sheep Camp with Brown carrying 100 pounds himself and armed with a revolver.
