Washington May 21 General Horatio King postmaster general during part of Buchanan's presidency died at 5 20 this morning in his 80th year from influenza. He came from Paria Maine and was appointed first assistant postmaster general in 184 serving under Holt. King served as postmaster general from February 12 1861 to March 5 following and retired from active life in 1875. He was a noted litterateur and is survived by his wife.

Washington May 2 The conferees on the family civil applications bill agreed the key change is that the February 22 1897 Cleveland forest order setting aside 21 million acres will be revoked only if lands are not disposed of by March 1 1898. If not disposed of they revert to the original order with possible presidential modification. Provisions for government forest reservations remain as in the senate amendments, and settlers may claim other lands in the public domain.
