Memphis July 27 Senator Harris arrived in Memphis and said that before leaving Washington Senator Gorman of Maryland had assured him he would accept a place on the national executive committee. Harris expects the silver sentiment to spread in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Arthur Sewall, in Bath Me on July 27, says another Maine Democratic convention will pass resolutions endorsing the Chicago platform. Chairman Hughes and Sewall discussed the plan in conference, with no statement about a new gubernatorial candidate to replace Winslow.
A Sioux City dispatch notes storms across northwestern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota. Moville area grain suffered 5 to 20 bushels per acre or total destruction with shattered buildings and glass. He says he may help or oppose party defeat over the financial question and warns southern supporters over free coinage fringe ideas. Cleveland doubts carrying New York if the party weak on coinage.
In St Louis on July 27 leading populist voices including Senator Butler ex Chairman Taubeneck Eugene V Delis Robert Schilling Milwaukee Senator Allen Nebraska Senator Peffer Kansas Mrs Mary Eliza Lease Kansas Mrs Roberts Georgia Coxey and Carl Brown will speak. Debs backs initiative and referendum. Currency is the central issue with women campaigning on it. Mrs Roberts praised for forceful remarks at the Bryan nomination speech.
Ignatius Donnelly returns from St Louis and says in his paper the Representative that he will back Bryan and the populist state ticket to the end of the campaign. He notes many candidates sought endorsements, helped Bryan win, and warns that Bryan is talking too much and is standing over a powder magazine.

The body of Sheriff David Douglas and a dead highwayman were found shot apart in the woods near Nevada City California. Douglas died from gunshot wounds to the heart and face after pursuing the robber alone with his dog. The highwayman’s rifle showed no use, and authorities suspect an unseen accomplice behind a rash of robberies in the area.

He denied knowledge of another Samoa king elected at German urging and said Brandes may return as Samoa chief justice. Chamberlain spoke on Venezuela settlement limits, noting negotiations and on-site investigations must precede any data.
Betz and Moore, wanted in Portland, faced Justice Kagan in Walla Walla as charges of fugitives from justice were dismissed.
