Russia Could Export More Wheat If Markets Aligned

The Statist notes Russia could have exported more wheat from 1889 to 1892 if crops averaged 31.6 million quarters, with 43 and 48.5 million quarters in later years. Origin of the phrase Gone to Pot traced to a tailor tale

An old story links the saying Gone to pot to a Samurecand tailor living near a city gate by a cemetery. Neighbors say the knight of the shears kept an earthen pot by his cottage, dropping a pebble for each corpse that passed. After his death, they remarked he too had gone to pot.
