The Pittsburg crowd packed the hall to standing room as Mr. Bryan spoke to supporters and skeptics. He defended the Democratic platform, warned against foreign financial domination, and urged a broad democracy where common people decide policy.
At Pittsburg Avenue Theater Mr. Bryan spoke with Joseph Holley introducing him. He framed the 16 to 1 issue, praised rights and responsibilities of citizens, and urged voters to judge by moral questions in a campaign focused on economic policy and American governance.
Speaker defends 16 to 1 ratio as the legal standard for silver coinage. He argues for free coinage so both silver and gold dollars can be minted, enabling debt payments with either metal. He warns against cornering a single metal and praises mine owners for producing silver. Applause follows.
A runaway trolley on the Columbia & Donohoe railway near Lancaster Pennsylvania killed seven people and injured five more as it derailed on a steep grade. The car reached high speed, struck a tree, toppled into a ditch and several passengers suffered severe injuries.
Ellensburg Washington August 10 delegates to the state convention were elected as the populist county convention debated fusion with the Democrats. Agreement proposed ceding treasurer one representative one commissioner and nine superintendent of schools to Democrats while conceding superior judge and state senator to silverites. A tabled report led to further conference and adjournment. Democrats adjourned sine die after their own fierce session and a contested plan to name a delegates committee.
The Japanese Steamship Company, planning a Seattle to Orient service, opens San Francisco offices and launches aggressive pricing against Pacific Mail and Occidental and Oriental lines. Passenger rates show a marked reduction, averaging about half.
In New York on August 10 the heat illness toll reached 100 with hourly additions reported. Ambulatory units and police wagons ferried victims to hospitals as street horses collapsed and outdoor work halted amid record temperatures and widespread distress.
Chicago reports record heat with ambulances, police and postmen affected. Big stores become makeshift hospitals as clerks faint and hundreds quit. 577 deaths in one week, plus over 1000 animals dying citywide. Other cities report sunstroke and fatalities amid heat waves.
Washington August 10 Major Dunwoody reports no relief from the heat across the east as the sweltering spell persists. Cooler readings appear in the Ohio valley and lower lake region with storms, while the plains and gulf coast remain around 100 degrees. A possible break is seen in the Rockies but not for two days.
Steamers arrive in New York on August 10 with vessels Fithopia Hasgen Normandie and Liverpee docking, officers reporting daily transatlantic traffic resuming.
The Rocky Mountain News asked leading mining and smelting men about Senator Thurston’s charge of a silver mine owners bureau paying W J Bryan. Seventeen replies, including J J Hagerman and Eben Smith, deny any such bureau or payroll and call the allegation a falsehood.
The McKinley league state committee writes to Mark Hanna warning against Frederick Gibbs and the New York party machine. It accuses Gibbs of opposing Major McKinney, undermining the party, and señes betrayal of candidates, noting disloyalty in various states and a slim margin in Blaine’s New York defeat.
Hundreds of wheelmen have converged on Louisville for the seventh annual meet. Cyclists, officers of the L A W and large crowds fill the city as preparations begin. The main events start Wednesday with the program awaiting the important races.
A Colorado meeting of Democratic Populist and Silver party committees discussed presidential elector fusion. No formal action was taken but strong sentiment favored united action. The session also considered re-electing Senator Teller with broad support.
At the Christian alliance meeting in Old Orchard Maine on Aug 10 a total of 101000 was raised in cash checks and jewelry for the alliance fund. The largest gift was 25000 from an unnamed estate, with donations ranging from that amount to small sums, and a contribution of 200 from the Denver alliance.
L. T. Davenport of New York defeated John Winston of Indianapolis in the 1 live bird challenge at Burnside. Davenport killed five more birds than Winston, taking the win by a margin of five birds.
After eight hours of faction fights Democrats Populists and Free Silver Republicans in Yakima Washington merged to back a fusion slate. The alliance split offices among groups with Democrat cler k coroner and treasurer and Free Silver Republicans prosecuting attorney and county commissioners while delegates were sent to Ellensburg.
Mrs. Nettie Craven testified in San Francisco on August 10 that Governor Budd sent for her during the last registry session. She said Varles Fair claimed his father Senator Fair left a will with her and that the will in Mr Craven's possession would benefit him. The governor demanded the will under threat of penitentiary and she described Dr. Livingston being chosen as executor after discussions with Senator Fair.
Honolulu reports ex-minister of finance P. C. Jones sails to San Francisco to float a refunding loan. He plans to sell about 3.5 million in Hawaiian government bonds at 4 percent interest. His contract provides a 5 percent discount and a 3 percent commission, with a deadline of November 1 to complete the sale.
In Salt Lake City Utah Charles Thiede was hanged in the county jail yard for the murder of his wife on April 1. He maintained innocence as a saloon keeper who nearly severed her heel with a knife. In Omaha Claud Hoover was hanged after admitting repentance, for shooting and killing Councilman Sam Dubose, his brother-in-law, in a dispute last fall.
The St Hyacinthe chamber of commerce approved a bank action to discount all American money by 10 percent and warned merchants, farmers, and the public not to accept American currency under any circumstances.
Cripple Creek Colorado August 7 the city council unanimously suspended Police Judge R G Mullen amid accusations of outrages against peaceable citizens. The suspension follows a brutal assault last night on W J Kerr a newspaper correspondent who reported the incident Mullen commanded deputy sheriffs during the 1894 strike.
Shoshone County Populist delegates were chosen at the county convention in Wallace on August 10. Delegates include C. C. Fuller, Ed Boyce, R. E. Seysler, Walter A. Jones, Eugene Sage, F. C. Easton, T. N. Barnard, F. P. Machette, J. D. Young, Thomas Henry, James Lemon, Joseph Shannon, and F. W. Walton. They adjourned to September 12 to nominate county officers and fusion was debated amid middle of the road opposition.
Bert Clarage of Baltimore wins with 25 straight birds in the two day Dupont live-bird tournament in Chicago. Wallack Miller, Christopher Gottlieb, George Rolt also tally long scores as 11,000 spectators watch the dramatic finish. Clarage earns top prize while distractive cheers and tight nerves mark the final rounds.
St Louis endured the hottest week on record with 100 degrees by 4 pm and many readings over 110 in exposed spots. The city reported numerous prostrations today including several deaths as heat gripped the region.

A Columbia and Donegal Electric railroad trolley derailed just outside Columbia causing three deaths and fifteen injuries. The dead include Adam Forelinger and Henry Smith with one unnamed victim. The brake failed when a gear wheel broke. Lawn tennis is not a very quiet game. Even the costumes are loud.
