On January 11 a remarkable atmospheric display over southern England and western France featured solar halos and sun dogs. Concentric circles and rainbow arches surrounded the sun with mock suns among the halos, caused by high altitude clouds of tiny ice crystals.
Curious spiral fossils found in Permian rocks in Russia appear to be a rolled up enamelled sawlike appendage. French geologist Monsieur Priem proposes the fish used it as an extension of its upper jaw. The device resembles the sawfish instrument in function though not in form.

The text describes Guam as nearly utopian with widespread land ownership and self sufficiency. Men perform farming while women stay home, with no wage labor, stores, or external markets. Governor O Leary notes a scarcity of selling opportunities and a lack of need for money, yet suggests modern progress awaits despite the seeming harmony.
The death of Leung Sing, once a Cantonese mandarin and globe trotter, marks a meteoric rise and tragic fall. Born in Canton wealth, educated in China and the United States, he rose to influence in Vienna and Canton, then faded after a duplicitous plot. He died in Philadelphia poverty and Potter's Field, unlamented.
Ernst Andree, brother of S A Andree, believes his polar expedition brother may be alive and will communicate by late summer. He cites ice pack movements and currents as key to the balloon voyage and notes the crew started July 11, 1897 from Norway. He warns if no word by autumn, chances of survival are slim. A separate incident reports a mob harassing Dock Thomas, a Pullman porter, at Chicago docks until police intervention saved him.
Features include Major Mathew A. Batson's career from Carbon dale to the Philippines with the Maccabees and a note on the global need for war horses and mules. Also a Dewey Day aside on Chicago golf and a pamphlet on Spain's Caney and San Juan defenses with Harper's Weekly insights.
