An amendment to the homestead law requires applicants to swear they own no more than 160 acres and intend to use land for a home. A sugar beet trial offers a square rod planting test with sugar beet samples, sandy loam soil, and 15 inches deep plowing, inviting valley farmers to participate and evaluate land suitability.
