The Topeka Fall Festival parade drew massive crowds as flower laden floats, tableaux, and motorized displays lit up the streets. Police raided Nick Chiles East Seventh Street venue last night using an entire night force. Two kegs of beer whisky and fixtures were seized with no resistance. Chiles posted a $200 bond and was released. deputy sheriff William Stewart joined as bondman. Both charges involve his being proprietor of the joint.
Minneapolis report says a major early morning fire destroyed the entire business portion except for one block. A new plant to replace a powder works facility, started up in California, now operates with a daily output of 6,000 pounds. Orders for smokeless powder ensure two years of nonstop work.
Denver Sept 30 The men who attempted to rob a Denver and Rio Grande line train near Husted Wednesday night have eluded pursuing posses. Bloodhounds traced the trail for ten miles into the mountains before losing it near the peaks.
Reports from across the dominion indicate prohibition carried by a large majority in yesterday's vote. Indications suggest turnout was probably not more than half of the registered electors, with strong support seen in many regions.
San Francisco September report by bank commissioners shows the August 31 condition of California banks. Compared to July 1, 1897, over thirteen months the aggregate assets and liabilities rose by 25, and the total reaches 290,182,531. The report notes Salmon Instead of Gold Victoria, and the Courage Chi arrives in Victoria with Alaska passengers.
Willam A. Panik, a Roosevelts era figure, reports his discharge papers and eighteen dollars stolen while walking on Kansas avenue around noon. A Despatch report describes a tornado and fire sweeping Cumberland Wisconsin and Beaver Dam area. The blaze destroyed the Beaver Dam Lumber company mills, planing mill, sheds, barns and 22 residences while fires threatened the city center. Firefighters and volunteers struggled as trains sheltered civilians and a heavy rain briefly checked the flames.
