Governor McKinley visits Topeka with a large rail fan turnout. Excursion trains from Santa Fe, Rock Island, Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific bring crowds from multiple cities. A mounted guard escorts the governor from depot to state house where speaking will be staged for about twenty five minutes.
McKinley begins a statewide campaign after a non political address in Ballyfontaine Ohio as he opens memorial bell corner stones. He plans stops in Findlay and multiple cities across Missouri Kansas Nebraska Iowa Minnesota and Illinois through the week ending next Saturday culminating in Des Moines.
Charles Martin son of Senator John Martin died at the Sante Fe hotel in Topeka of peritonitis and appendicitis after a surgical operation. Senator Martin arrived by train with Dr McClintock, and the family awaited notification as he left for Hutchinson. Martin, once a bank receiver and Pullman conductor, was a respected local figure in Topeka.
A hurricane struck Jacksonville at around 11 am with 60 mile per hour gusts at the river mouth, flooding streets and washing out the Union depot. The Everett hotel is unroofed, several houses blown down, and losses reach about 20000 with injuries reported and no confirmed deaths. Communications with south Florida are cut, orange groves damaged, and Mayport flooded.
The state military board adjourned after aligning an encampment plan for the Kanawad National Guard lasting five days in the third week of October. Funds limited the event to brigades rather than a full division, with Gen. Sears leading the first brigade at Garnett or Ottawa and units to Beloit, Wichita, and Beloit under other generals. Mrs Thacher and family have settled in for the winter at the group home.

A Sept 26 report from Dente claims rumors of the Russian czar’s death are false. An entourage member of Grand Duke Peter, visiting the city, says the czar’s physician promised more life if orders are followed. It is noted the czar reportedly suffers severe kidney disease.
Funeral services for Robert M. Smith were held at 10 o'clock this morning from his mother's home at 129 Quincyetree. Reports note Rock Island's harvest excursion waning, with extra coaches on west and northbound trains. Local court cases include Mrs Cowley Martingat charged with liquor sales and Detective F. M. Jacobs' first case. The Jefferson Davis libel jury failed to reach verdict. Ladies' Music Club met, planning a concert for Elison next Friday. A potential time-card change looms for the Hockte land system this Sunday. Harrison Davidson and Fred Merwin suffered a runaway scare near Christ Hospital. Will Eberle's horse died, but the riders escaped injury.
