The strike has persisted for months with prior trouble reported.
Romulo M Alcivar, a Mexican on the Hamburg American liner Prinz Oskar, arrived Genoa Sept 22 and tried to kill Captain Dugge and Philadelphia lawyer Frank R Shattuck. Alcivar fired a revolver, wounding the captain in the mouth and Shattuck in the left shoulder before being overpowered and sent to an insane asylum.
A Speck train carrying the Archbishop of Canterbury from Bar Harbor to Washington wrecked near East Brookfield on the Boston Albany division. The Archbishop and Mrs. Davideau, along with J Pierpont Morgan and others, were shaken but not seriously injured. The wreck halted briefly before the Archbishop’s party resumed their journey on a replacement engine.
A bridge over the Grand River near Afton collapsed injuring twenty one and killing three. Surgeons Henry Rucke Thomas Browning Ray Mook Ive Cary and others were summoned from Grove and Laflin. The structure fell without warning during construction, snapping a steel pier and releasing the ferry connection between Vinita and Grave.
