Branum and Bailey perform the world’s greatest show in Topeka with their first act this afternoon. The performance features daring feats and a lineup designed to thrill local audiences.
Topeka patrons flocked to the parade and circus at the fairgrounds as Barnum and Bailey presented the world’s greatest show. Seven thousand dollars daily expenses, 49 horses, and a grand lineup drew 14 508 attendees for the first performance, with a second show tonight.
The Barnum circus recently returned to the country after five years abroad traveling across Europe and England. It employs about 10 085 people with 3 000 meals prepared daily in its own kitchens. The show travels with billboards and a system of paid salaries, interpreters, and a press office. Notable acts include Looping the Gap and the two daredevils on a single bicycle.
A telegraph to the State Journal from Des Moines reports Topeka has joined the Western Baseball League but no details follow. Danel Sullivan, engineer of the Rock Island Passenger train wrecked between Perry and Williamstown on February 17, 1903, sues Union Pacific for 25000. Attorneys Boyle and Guthrie of Kansas City represent him. He claims UP and its contract with Rock Island failed to keep the track clear for trains from Topeka to Kansas City. He suffered eight weeks bedridden with fever and lost a leg, and previously earned 193 to 200 monthly. He is 44. He seeks about 225000 in damages.
Four Denver firemen are in precarious condition after inhaling fumes from a nitric acid carboy burned by a lightning strike that touched off a blaze in the etching rooms of a printing company. Fireman Sherman B. Wilcox suffers double pneumonia and is listed in critical condition. Lt. Charles Dotof and Charles Eymann are also reported seriously ill.
A morning observance marks a formal salute of twenty one guns as Peter Growned opens ceremonial activities. Officials from the local government led the salute, with residents gathering in the square to honor the occasion and commemorate the day.

Chicago September 21 An accident blamed on attempting to rob the train showed the switch had been partially opened and obstructed The light was cut and the lock found in an unjoined end The switch was in order less than an hour earlier. Odd Fellows on an Excursion San Francisco September 21 About two thousand Odd Fellows and Daughters of Rebekah toured San Francisco bay visiting Alcatraz and Angel Island and other points of interest The sovereign grand lodge met at Native Sons hall for questions of the order The grand encampment of California conducted its work including officers’ installation.
The Democratic State convention met in Denver to nominate a ticket for five presidential electors a congressman at large and a full state ticket. Charlen J Hughes is favored for governor though he and Hughes and Shafroth often said they did not want the nomination. Senator Henry M Teller was elected temporary chairman and outlined party policy.
Oakley Kansas population 350 was entirely burned leaving only one store intact. The blaze started in the Tennessee hotel and quickly spread to sixteen businesses. Several hotel guests escaped unharmed. Loss estimated at 75000 dollars with unknown origin of the fire.
In Liverpool on Sept 21 thousands of immigrants packed steerage offices hoping for $10 passage to America. The Baltic sailing today left with about two thousand $10 emigrants turned away due to limited accommodation. The Merion also sailed filled with the last $10 fares to Philadelphia as Scandinavians led the crowd with a notable British presence.
A Macon dispatch says Talbotton reports a crowd attacked several miles from town injuring and killing four black men after trials for belonging to a before day club. The telephone line is cut. sheriff and posse proceed to the scene.
J. W. Fishback went on trial in a common pleas court in Kansas City Kansas for robbing passengers on a Missouri Pacific sleeper December 19 1892 near the city. Two witnesses James P English and J T Lemint testified that Fishback and accomplices searched passengers and took watches and cash while threatening violence.
At Peoria Michigan on September 21 Prof Willis L Moore head of the U S weather bureau condemned long range forecasts and charlatans in newspapers during a convention of weather men. Prof Garret's paper on forecasting prompted the rebuke and stirred the gathering. The day opened with Prof Bigelow of Washington discussing concurrent theory of storms while the ladies tour and a banquet concluded the day.
