In Cuartanoona Tenn on September 14 1889 a vast ceremony marked the formal dedication of Chickamauga battlefield as a national park site. Generals John M Palmer and John B Gordon spoke to about 50 000 veterans and spectators including Union and Confederate survivors as Vice President Stevenson presided. The event featured a 44 gun salute and a stirring rendition of the national anthem with tears and pride shared by old soldiers on both sides.
