At the Topeka fair a Kansas Derby thrill led by Senator Matts in fast time drew 3,000 spectators. A lively midway show and vaudeville between heats complemented the racing. Betting scenes, tense finishes, and a volatile crowd marred by a few unruly moments highlighted a day of debates, bets, and stock exhibitions.
In a crowded afternoon program, a field of eight finished with the winner in the bunch as top jockey weighed in. Finals included a 2:35 trot won by Ailsty. Daven with Deed Tinker of Wichita claimed first in the pacing heats, while Lord Stine driven by W N McKinney took the 2:16% second heat. Scraps caused a mishap, but Leo Rex led the first heat and Topeka Muld set pace in the sprint lineup. The main mile race was postponed, and a two-machine motorcycle one mile race ended with one machine out of power ridden by John Perrin.
At the Kansas exposition grounds authorities ordered all joints closed by noon with wagons loaded with beer barred. Joint tents shift to horsemen use. gambling devices found under the grand stand were shut down. Joplin Missouri September 10 The Democratic campaign in Missouri opened with about 5000 attendees. William J Bryan the principal speaker attacked trusts and called Roosevelt unable to curb them. He argued reform would come from Republicans not Democrats and warned about federal remedies. He claimed a trust magnate behind bars could better dismantle trusts than any presidential action.
A special to the Star from Ottawa, Kan., reports the new Ottawa University building in Ottawa City, Raneas City, Mo., burned early morning. The structure, intended to open today, drew hundreds of prospective students and faculty. The cause remains unknown as investigators examine the scene for origins. The blaze halted the planned opening and the building will be rebuilt.
The Fourth Minnesota Regiment reunion witnesses veterans debating a resolution to preserve Civil War trophies amid calls to honor the Fiftieth and Fifty-seventh regiments. The contentious vote and ensuing discussion highlight legacy clashes and commemorative tensions among attending units.
Last Saturday in Chase county saw fusionists at Cottonwood Falls and Republicans at Strong City hosting county conventions. Discussions covered candidate Craddock and Bailey, with Farrington hosting Craddock at Strong City. both candidates for governor met informally, sharing cordial greetings and mutual courtesy.

President Roosevelt completed a three week tour traveling 1,666 miles by rail over Baltimore & Ohio and Southern lines before returning to Oyster Bay. He rested briefly in Washington then continued to New York aboard a Sylph conveyance, with Secretary Cortelyou and aides aboard. The journey featured crowd interest at depots and stations as the president traveled in two attached cars.
