Burnett and Jumper, American merce have arrived at Southampton with a distressing tale of a party of 210 negro colonists who sailed from Savannah on March 19 aboard the Henga for Liberia. Only two found work in Monrovia. Fever and privations killed half the group. The rest, ill and unable to travel, headed for the coast hoping to return to America. The Birmingham, Alabama based International Emigration Society, which organized the colony and promised three months of rations, dumped the colonists on the shore and left them to perish.
