Shot Tower Goes One Of The Oldest City Structures
The old shot tower at Fifteenth and Quincy streets, repaired and torn down, carried legends of rounds fired by settlers and Indians. Built in the 1860s as a residence, it became a colorful slum and rough resort. A murder over a five cent craps game led to a conviction, after police captured the killer in a rear alley. The tower housed a tavern, a joint, and dangerous stairs, with frequent night gunshots in South Topeka.
