A British public mood souring as early war bulletins draw criticism, confusion, and appeals for clearer explanations. Reports from London note dismay at official lines, questions about tactics, and concern over casualties and retreat dynamics in Natal and surrounding theaters.
Washington October 27 Cabinet meeting lasted two and a half hours. Members were reticent after adjournment and cautioned by the President not to speak. Discussion centered on the Philippines and likely military and naval plans for immediate operation.
M. Holman, chairman of the music committee, reports three more bands Abilene Kansas City and Salina will join to reach sixteen bands for the Twentieth celebration. Bands will perform at multiple street intersections from Fourth to Ninth and at other key points. Concerts scheduled 2 08 4 00 5 20, and 7 20 pm with additional private performances inside the venue. Admission will be charged for the indoor concert.
A bankers delegation led by FP W Hayes of Detroit and Charles R Hawner of New York testified before Internal Revenue Commissioner Wilson about the special war tax on bankers and brokers. They argued foreign money orders and travelers checks are exchange and taxable, and that express company issues involving foreign currency should bear the tax, citing a Supreme Court decision and the Lottery's general ruling.

Brigadier General Guy V. Henry U S W former military governor of Porto Rico died at 3 50 AM at his home 189 Madison avenue New York aged 60 pneumonia. He had been unconscious for hours with family at his bedside except his son Captain Guy V Henry In. Physicians treated him with oxygen but he sank and died peacefully after a brief illness.
John W. Breidenthal, noted to be in Kansas City yesterday, says he has received several letters urging him to run for governor but refuses to become a candidate. Despite his protestations, Populists are pressing him as their possible nominee.
Adjutant General S. M. Fox has received a large consignment of mail for Twentieth Kansas members once lost when the steamer Morgan City wrecked off the Japan coast. The letters survived the voyage and will be given to the Kansans upon arrival in Topeka next week.
Details of the Zurich disaster reach Christiania. After the wreck the crew built two rafts carrying the captain three engineers second mate and four negroes with two dogs. Neither raft had food or water and they drifted four days. The first raft was found with only the captain alive. the second washed ashore with only a corpse found.
Foreign ministers at the American legation met yesterday and declined to recognize the Castro government without their governments guidance. President Andrade, in Barbadoes, ordered the Puerto Cabello commander to defend the city to the last extremity as Coro and Maracaibo surrender to General Castro. Order reigns in Caracas.
Morrison, a Topeka based preacher, was hanged in Vernon Texas after being found guilty of murdering his wife to marry Miss Annie Whittlesey of Topeka. Public witnesses described his final speech as defiant while neighbors and investigators traced his letters and movements from Topeka to Higgins Texas and Panhandle.
The Vernon trial traced Rev. Morrison from Topeka to St Louis through Louisiana and Indiana to the Pacific coast where he nearly enlisted in the navy. Broadcast cards identified him after his wife's death. Autopsy found strychnine. Morrison was convicted on September 27, 1898. His appeal effort sought clemency from Governor Sayers, with commutation urged to life. Morrison and wife Minnie Brady were from Tilmais and Hillsboro, Illinois, married in 1580.
A Post Dispatch special from Austin reports Samuel Watrous one of the pair who killed G W Engberg and wife was hanged in the jail yard. Before dying Watrous said he was going to heaven. James Davidson, convicted of the same crime, faces hanging on November 24. The Danlas Tex dispatch notes Walter Ford, who killed his sweetheart Lucinda More at Caco, died in prison after faltering in his statement.
B. F. Hime, jailed in Russell county for theft and delay of mail, hopes to witness the Twentieth Kansas parade. An old soldier, he has written to President McKinley requesting a pardon in time for the event. The request comes after his earlier sentence and fines. his release date nears and he also seeks gubernatorial clemency.
A life sized paper mache anatomy model arrived at Kanpas Medici College. The $1000 imported exhibit shows detailed nerves arteries and organs detachable for study, intended to educate students before dissection.
Justice Wright's court hears a $160.45 claim from L. McInnis against the Ancient Order of the Pyramids. Garnishment served on Merchants National Bank seeks any deposited funds. McInnis, Missouri state inspector, says the amount is owed on salary and commissions. Bel Stratten, Colorado state inspector, also filed a separate action. Frank S. Thames granted license as US agent for Continental Insurance Company.
Osage county Republicans weigh the idea of Judge Theamson of Burlingame challenging incumbent J. M. Miller for Congress in the Fourth district next year. Local Osage politicians warn such a move would disrupt Miller’s renomination and upend existing plans, urging Theamson to remain in his role as district judge. The Scranton resident quoted says Theamson must stay out of the race to preserve current deals.
W. W. Cook from Indiana recounts a two week visit to Nettlesville renewing old ties. He notes Kansas fighters and Twentieth Kansas dominate local conversation on trains and in town. Cook says people express strong pride in the Kansas volunteers and recalls a reception in Vinpeka. He invited many acquaintances to visit.
Judge JT West, assistant attorney general, returned from a southeast state tour. He visited Fort Scott and Karnes City. He noted heavy local interest in an upcoming reception planning and a charter for a special train from Topeka. Hundreds from Upstate counties expected to attend.
