A catastrophic blaze tore through a nine story structure occupied by Hunt Wilkinson & Co furniture manufacturers in Philadelphia. The fire began in the cellar, spread via an elevator shaft, trapping workers and causing numerous deaths and injuries as hundreds leaped from flames and crowds gathered on Market Street. Property losses exceed 500000 as responders battled the blaze and recovered bodies from the ruins.
A nine story Hunt Wilkinson Co building at 1221 Market Street in Philadelphia burned after an apparent early evening explosion, killing 19 and injuring many as flames trapped workers on upper floors. Rescue operations found four corpses, with 26 dead reported later. officials fear more bodies buried in the rubble as walls collapsed and smoke thickened. Fire spread to neighboring structures, but major retail stores and a second building at 1217 Market were saved. Names of the dead include Susan Gormley, Fred Whittington, and Bentry A. Sharlo.
Chicago and Washington cables report Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley accepted the Hamilton Club of Chicago invitation for a reception and banquet in his honor. Edwin A. Munger, president of the club, acknowledged the invitation and indicated no date could be named yet.
