Des Moines Oct 25 The state board of control announced a complete investigation of riots at the girls reform school at Mitchelville and pending this the seven readers man in fact here will be kept there. Some leaders will be sent to the penitentiary while others who had prior convictions may serve out terms. remaining inmates will be returned to the bacitation. Order is comparatively good at the institution today.
Cleveland councilman J. Riley has received a legacy of eighty thousand dollars. Four years earlier in San Antonio, he stopped a runaway team, likely saving the life of the driver, a Palmer Texas farmer named John Walley. Walley was severely injured and presumed to lose an arm, but later recovered.
Washington October 25 The War Department announces Transport Grant carrying the Twenty sixth volunteers and recruits arrived yesterday without casualties. Civilian employees also arrived this morning in good condition. Additional personnel and others aboard reported safe and well in transit.
Dahlgren makes 31 knots an hour during several hours trial at sea near Bath Maine. The obsolescent boat exceeded her contract requirements and proved herself a very able craft. The same trial saw better time over a mile course than any torpedo boat of her size. Conditions were favorable.

London October 25 Grant Allen the author died after a prolonged illness. Born in Hingston Ontario in 1848 he was 51. A native of the dominion he studied in America and at Oxford then moved to London. He began as a schoolmaster before turning to literature and gained prominence in fiction though his early work Psychological Apathietica was self funded and loss making. He sought colonial themes but became best known for fiction and scientific writing.
Kansas City report quotes Miss Helen Gould in Mexico last night urging opposition to Brigham He Roberts the polygamist elected to Congress. She advocates writing to congressmen as the best method, arguing voters have greater influence than the courts in the matter.
The Populists in the county abandon the fusion deal from the start of the fall campaign and adopt a straight party ticket. Originally they declined to give Democrats a seat, then some Democrats swapped candidates onto the ticket, later the Populists replaced them, and now run a straight Populist line focusing on party issues.
Dr W B Swan secretary of the state board of health reports a quarantine on Joplin and Springfield Mo areas. Railroad officers have orders to stop Heather baggage and passengers from those towns toward Kansas points. A case arrived at Missouri Pacific hospital in Kansas City and authorities believe it is smallpox. A strict quarantine is in place at Kansas City.
In Icago on October 25, furriers report tight supply driving higher costs. The 360 sable from last year now sells around 150 dollars and dyed furs have risen 20 to 70 percent. A local dealer cites only about 7,000 seal skins this year for the U.S. market and expects further hikes next year amid strong demand.
Mrs. George W. Whitcomb, wife of a Topeka attorney, acted with remarkable presence of mind during a kerosene lamp explosion that started a fire in their West Sixth avenue home.
