Closing exercises of the bicentennial celebration brought a shower of honors for representatives of many peoples. The commemorative address was delivered by Justice David J. Brewer, highlighting the event and its significance in the city.
New Haven hosts President Theodore Roosevelt for Yale Universitys bicentennial ceremonies. Delegates from many groups attend as Yale confers honorary degrees and the crowd greets Roosevelts arrival and parade through Chapel Street to the Hyperion Theatre.

Train robbers attacked the northbound Southern Pacific Overland Ex Press near Walkers station four miles south of Cottage Grove Oregon. They dynamited the express car and forced the crew from the engine and mail car but were repelled by Express Messenger C Charles who fired back, allowing him to keep the loot from the safe while the robbers fled with the registered mail. Police moved to search Lane and Douglas counties but no description of the suspects was released.
Sir Thomas Lipton plans to sell Shamrock II and has placed the vessel with Tams Lemoine and Crane of New York to dispose of it. The price is not disclosed as the sale hits the American market following Lipton's departure for Chicago.
Harry Croft, owner of Stone's Folly west of town, was kept prisoner overnight by two men with shotguns who confronted him in his yard. He alerted authorities and Special Officer Hopkins investigated, finding no trace of the intruders. George C. Corning an early Topeka settler and Bank of Topeka founder died of diabetes in Joplin Missouri Tuesday night. Funeral planned for Carthage Missouri. He helped organize Topeka Bank in 1869 and later served as Colorado state treasurer before financial losses. He lived in Potwin and Bram Chi Case before moving to Missouri. about 65, long afflicted by diabetes.
