Gov W E Stanley wires the State Journal praising the Twentieth Emmaas as they march to camp. The telegram notes ideal weather, an ovation from crowds, and buoyant spirits as Kansas celebrates its soldiers from prior service. Col Metcalf grants 48 hours rest to meet supporters and visiting crowds.
Dispatches describe the arrival of the Twentieth Kansas and soldiers on the transport Tartar in San Francisco. Crowds cheered as quarantine rules delayed departure while officers prepared for debarkation. soldiers received wine and fruit amid a festive, noisy welcome before marching toward camps and duties in a tense wartime atmosphere.
Brigadier General Funston asserts Filipinos cannot govern themselves and urge a firm colonial rule to subdue the islands. He recounts discussions with Filipino leaders, warns against restraint, and favors a governor general with broad powers to stabilize governance.
The Twentyeth Kansas begins homeward voyage from Manila aboard the transport Tartar after seven months of campaign. The supreme court chose D. A. Valentine of Clay Center as clerk to succeed John Martin. He will start on October BX. Valentine edits and owns the Clay Center Times, a leading weekly. He is a graduate of the state university and son of ex Supreme Justice D. M. Valentine of Topeka.
