Martial law declared in Honolulu by U S Army officers
On October 3 and 4 martial law was proclaimed in Honolulu by Second Lieutenant Merelan and First Lieutenant Wheelock. Mounted troops enforced orders, citizens were kept off streets, sailors fled to ships, and two steamer captains and a customs officer sought safety. Gen. King expressed anger. the officers face court martial. Merriam is the son of General Merriam. One private Porter and a brother Fred suffered pneumonia and critical injury.
