Chambers, who killed two men in Leavenworth in 1844 and was sentenced to hang, has served eighteen years and will be released on October 10. He has Greek ancestry and would have benefited from the Greek land allotment but stayed imprisoned. The governor planned a further trial to resume the allotment process.
Mount Carmel Pa Oct. White in Company Fourth Infantry patrolled Lehigh Company’s Righter colliery early today when three men armed with shotguns were found hiding behind an engine house. They were captured. later released. A midnight rock attack from an unknown crowd sparked shots toward the assailants. Colonel O’Neill ordered restraint and no fatalities reported as the mine stayed idle.
Washburn football team left at noon to play Emporia State Normal after wet grounds canceled the Topeka game. Early plans shifted to Emporia with two hours of rest notes. Normal hopes for victory overshadowed by Washburn’s memory of a prior loss and aim to return home triumphant.
Washington gets ready as the Grand Army of the Republic opens its thirty sixth encampment. Veterans from the Civil War era mingle with many young visitors while the capital glitters with decorations. A grand program includes an automobile parade, a Potomac regatta, Camp Reese Well dedication, and a fireworks display. New York October 18 The second trial of Rolin Molinserg with a poison pulpirine case is postponed. The court schedule shows Barrett and Deapeseers held as witnesses, with arraignment set for Monday next.
