A hurricane lashed Savannah and coastal Georgia, driving 70 mph winds for hours, flooding inland fields and submerging rice and cotton yards. Ships, wharves, and rail lines suffered major damage, with limited news from barrier islands as floodwaters rose to feet and wrecked vessels and crates.
Washington reports a special weather bulletin noting the storm which struck the Georgia and South Carolina coast moved into west central Georgia with diminished strength. If it moves north it may bring only heavy rainfall. observers will watch the mid Atlantic to issue timely warnings. In Charleston rice growers endure heavy losses from the recent hurricanes and high tides, with 30 to 40 percent damage feared as banks break and drivers fail to drain fields.
