Richard C Meade, a 43 year old insurance swindler who fled years ago with his stenographer, was convicted this morning and sentenced to the state penitentiary for five years. He faced many petitions from prominents in Atchison and many widows claimed they had been cheated out of money. Meade and his stenographer Miss Hianche Riddell vanished abroad, later resurfacing in New York City where he worked as a collector under an assumed name.
County Treasurer Stahl and County Clerk McCabe spent the day in their offices. Stahl said he handles incoming taxes sent by letter from suburban residents and many payments arrive daily. McCabe noted that people leave him alone on holidays and he will continue to work.
