A blaze swept through the Baldwin residence's kitchen at 1:25 with flames rapidly spreading. Mr Baldwin narrowly escaped death as firefighters battled the fire before it could reach the main structure and furnishings valued at 3 million dollars.
San Francisco November 24 fire raged through the Baldwin Hotel and Baldwin Theatre at Market and Powell, trapping guests and staff. Firemen battled flames from 2:15 a.m. as walls collapsed and the six story timbered building burned, with two confirmed deaths and many rescued from upper floors.
A man named Cranwell his wife and their seven year old child were trapped in a wagon miles from Viola Kansas. They endured a two night sleet storm as their horses could not move. The child died from the cold. The dispatch is stamped Wichita 4 and may lack confirmation.
New Haven reports over 100 meteors seen at Yale Observatory with plates exposed during a regent watch. Twelve cameras, four at a point, and two at a site captured meteors, yielding photographs believed to show identical meteor objects. Further details and measurements expected next month.
Chicago notes an alliance between the Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe to offer through tourist car service from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City and San Francisco. Butler and ex-State Controller Roberts are willing to yield, with Pratt and many leading Republicans backing Depew as the ideal representative for New York.

A charter yesterday launches a new export trade from Philadelphia with the British bark Highlands loading 2000 tons of cast iron pipes for London direct. If successful it becomes the first full cargo of its kind shipped from this or any American port. A large quantity has previously gone to Glasgow via the Allan line for American drainage and water pipe contracts.

Powderly, master workman of the Knights of Labor, is facing pressure from the Building Trades council of the District of Columbia for employing non union labor on a large new house at Cleveland Park. They instructed the secretary to write him a letter reminding him that as a former head of the Knights he should uphold the union’s first law.
Officers of the Regular Infantry establish a recruiting office on the second floor of the post office building in Topeka to enlist volunteers for foreign service between ages 18 and 36 under government authority. G H Estes, first Lieutenant of the Twentieth Infantry, based at Leavenworth, with Corporals McNish and Sherwin, lead the effort.
Montpelier Vermont November 23 The house passed a bill requiring state attorneys sheriffs and municipal judges to enforce the prohibitory law under heavy penalties in a sweeping move to curb illegal drinking activities.
Port Townsend reports a steamer Jessie Mirsten crew and passengers murdered at the mouth of the Kuskokwim by Taulasis after being saved from drowning. Indian wife Marsten’s account says survivors aided ashore then killed while sleeping. Bodies stripped and cast into sea. Molokonft’s tale partly corroborated by a letter to Barneson and Chikent.
Milwaukee November 21 Buffalo will replace St Joseph Mo in the Western League the franchise transfer to Buffalo to be formalized at a meeting of Western magnates tomorrow a new board of directors will be named and the schedule committee will discuss next February meeting dates and preliminaries for the upcoming season
