Emporia faces a banking collapse as First National Bank of Emporia fails amid heavy losses. William Martindale and C. Cross, with directors and stockholders, face scrutiny while Mrs Cross endures grief. The bank's assets shrink and depositors fear losses though officials assure dollar-for-dollar payment. Cross reportedly kills himself after the closure. investigation examines loans, notes, and misstatements.

New York reports the death of Ethel Marlowe during a Broadway staging of The Christian at the Kulkerbocker theater. The actress, aged unknown, collapsed on stage while playing Folly Love as medics and doctors failed to revive her. The incident occurred mid performance prompting an abrupt curtain call. Marlowe hailed from a prominent theatrical family, cousin to Sulla Marlowe and part of the James K Hackett troupe lineage.
Special to the Globe Democrat reports Prof J W Conway of Columbia University conducted a postmortem on eight dead cattle on George Richenise farm near here. Seventeen head died after dipping at East Street. Conway finds Texas fever likely, suggests dipping may hasten illness, and notes imported cattle from Victoria County Texas could be involved.
Kansas City readers learn two women Mrs Buchan and Mrs Behlieman booked passage on the Dorie for Hong Kong and Manila. Their husbands serve in the United States volunteer army. Frank Freeman son of attorney Winfield Freeman says the stowaway story is ridiculous and the Dorie is too fast to have involved Indiana passengers. The army officers are amused by the rumor.
Philadelphia November 17 Prof Seymour Eaton of Chicago discusses the retarding influence of the church before the Laymen's association of a Methodist church. His critique stirs clergymen and laymen, with some denouncing his views and likening him to radical skeptics. He accuses the church of neglecting six day needs in favor of Sabbath prayers and sermons, especially in Methodism, provoking notable reaction.
