A rumor of a fight near Oklahoma with two convicts at large follows reports of a large manhunt for escapees from a federal penitentiary. Florence, Kas Nov 14 Two convicts who escaped Fort Leavenworth penitentiary earlier that week forced a porter aboard a westbound Santa Fe train at Clements during the night. They commandeered the train briefly before authorities pursued.
The report describes three men attempting to evade capture by cutting a lantern and fleeing with a baggage car. A suspect jumped from the train at Florence at 4:20 AM, hiding in heavy timber. Leavenworth guards pursued, with no new captures after two convicts were taken at Cottan Wooed Falls last Tuesday night. nine convicts remain uncaught.
A detailed account describes the capture of three convicts Southerland Mulling and Robinson near Cottonwood Falls on a Monday. Pursued after a long chase with guards and volunteers firing along Rock Creek they surrendered at a farm and were later moved to Leavenworth.
