Sheriff Cook was seized by two wounded convicts and held as a prisoner for over three hours, an incident marked by a tense standoff before authorities regained control.
Officers surrounded a house but the suspects slipped away on foot. The front door was left unopposed, allowing the men to walk out without confrontation or arrest. Authorities continue to pursue leads.
Two federal prisoners from Fort Leavenworth eluded capture after a prolonged standoff at the Worcester farm near Pauline. Sheriff Cook and deputies pursued with a growing posse as the convicts seized Worcester and his wife, wounded him, and forced the couple to shield them. After a failed assault, the men slipped away toward the railroad with Cook and Mrs Worcester left unharmed but shaken.
A Topeka posse pursued Sherif Cook at Pauline with ten men. Officers include Chief Stahl, Jailer Lewson, and former sergeant W. H. Carpenter. Witnesses describe two swarthy and white men, one dubbed The Indian, wearing a white hat and red neckerchief, with one wounded in the outbreak.
Three convicts who stole a wagon and later horses were seen near McFarland and Alma on Sunday afternoon and again at 8:30 p m in Alma. They rode two horses, one carrying two men, and headed south toward the river. A posse organized by Wabaunsee County deputies chased them for hours but lost track as darkness fell. A farmer near Wamego reported held up by two of the escapees, who took clothing and money before fleeing west with their team and buggy.
Kansas City reports convicts fleeing Fort Leavenworth suffer another fatal injury near Quenemo four miles southwest of the penitentiary. Lawrence Lewis white twenty was shot in the back while fleeing and later died. He had been at the penitentiary since October for larceny. He refused to surrender, was shot by Officer Alexander, and died en route to the marshal's office awaiting port Leavenworth authority.
Two men wearing rough attire, possibly escaped convicts, were seen near Biehth and Tyler streets last night. They emerged from an alley behind Dudley’s bar, fled south on Tyler street after taking two lap robes from Dr Brew art’s buzzy. A family witness, Rev McKira, noted the sighting.
Captain Jackson of the federal pritor at Leavenworth with six guards left Topeka at 10 35 this morning on the Santa Fe to reach Cange City and head off three convicts who stole teams and buggies from farmers near Rock Creek and Corder. They were sighted near Manhattan but turned southwest after crossing the river at Alma or Rossville and are still being chased.
Three men believed to be convicts were spotted near Shorey Sunday evening and escaped. OMmeer Smith climbed through a trap door into a vacant house owned by C. H. Wheeler at 1528 North Taylor Street to search for them but they had gone. A later telegram from North Topeka sent officers to Wheeler's residence. Neighbors reported Friday night that three men entered the Wheeler house recently moved into Shorey.
Police responded after a report of voices and a broken light at night. Officers discovered a trap door to the attic but found no one, suspecting convicts may have hidden in the house after staying too long.
Guard Roone reports two convicts captors of Sheriff Cook at Mauline Sunday identified as Gilbert Mullins and Fred Robinson. Both described as Englishmen and Democrats, with Robinson described as powerful and possibly West Indian bred. Captain Telford and four guards arrived from Leavenworth to pursue, spending last night at Topeka area. Ambulence details incomplete in the dispatch.
Report describes Sherlif Cook capture after convicts entered a small three acre Paul orchard near Pauline station. Despite release, pursuers made no attempt to surround or follow them into open countryside as searches continued through noon.
Sheriff’s office reports two suspicious men possibly escaped convicts seen near the starch factory around 1 o clock this morning. A large crowd followed as they moved east, then vanished. Mayor Hughes Pavey and Tosas led a posse with revolvers and shotguns on horseback and in carriages, heading from Lown along Stiltatrees road toward the river, then east in search of the men.
