Private Fred Visher Archie Miller Robert J. Laynlt Fred Crav and others of the Nineteenth Infantry suffered injuries when a basement powder blast at the Shouse near Port Wayne ignited after a soldier smoked a cigarette. Comrades threw water on the flames to save the injured as they reached the top of a ramp leading from the basement.

Lamber Wilt chief comptroller of Bunglau Savings bank fled with 103000 guilders from Bunglau Bohemia. After a chase across Europe and America he was arrested in St Louis with his wife and aunt. Chicago detective led the arrest at the instigation of V Zemenky. Wilt confessed to taking 12000 guilders, claiming the rest was miscredited.
Norfolk Va November 1 The Maryland carrying five yellow fever cases and three deaths from Havana remains missing. The ship sailed from Havana October 28 toward Baltimore against quarantine advice from Dr Brinmer marine hospital service Havana. If sighted near Virginia capes it would have faced quarantine but authorities report no sightings or information about its present status amid fears of further disease aboard.
President Gom pers of the American Federation of Labor forwards a letter to state branches urging support for the eight hour day bill for all government work. He notes past House passage but Senate opposition and calls for union committees to press Senators to secure a pledge for support in December. The speech stresses peaceful methods and unity across the labor movement.
A man caused a brief blackout by placing barbed wire on a rail and tossing a stone over a trolley line near the fairgrounds. Omaha November 1 The Transmississippi and International Exposition closed at midnight with about 75,000 onlookers and a grand total 2,062,308 registered at the furnaces. The exposition left over $400,000 to be divided among stockholders after $1,500,000 spent and $300,000 paid to concessions plus $200,000 to exhibitors. Subscriptions totaled $390,000 with $19,000 unpaid and $100,000 donated by corporations. Subscriptions are expected to return about 80 percent.
A Spokane telegram reports a new gold ore strike near Republic Camp north of Colville reservation. A 430 foot level ledge has 24 feet of ore cut with drills still in ore, and the chute widens to as much as 26 feet. Ore is shipped to a Puget Sound smelter and treated at a nearby mill, with daily returns of about four dollars per day per current shipments.
General Wood will not take a home leave as Lawrence Lawton has delegated command in Santiago to him and reassigned Lawton to a division command in the United States. Wood plans to stay in Santiago, maintaining his house there, and Mrs. Wood and the children will remain for the time being, with a move to Santiago forthcoming.
