Rainfall in Topeka reaches 3.5 inches with the river at 18 feet and bridges washed. North Topeka evacuates as floodwaters surge, damaging the Rock Island and city railway bridges while crews work to clear debris and prevent further destruction.
Memorial Day events begin today with a community parade and program. Local officials urge participation as residents line the streets to honor veterans and celebrate the holiday with ceremonies and dignitaries.
Secretary Taft arrived after a twenty minute late train, with Parker shows not reaching Topeka until today.
Crowds visit Topeka cemeteries for devotion ceremonies as streets and houses glow with bunting and flags. Veterans place flowers on graves while weather and swollen rivers test plans for Kansas semi centennial celebrations.
Myron A. Waterman asks arrest W J Buchan former Wyandotte county state senator linked to grand jury probe. Buchan accused of trying to sway two Kansas City council members T A Gilbert and E H Kampfmler in December 1902 to back a Metropolitan street railway franchise for $1000 bribe. Gilbert later deniedaccepting and won a large mayoral victory.
A flood devastates Dragoon and Orange County with abandoned post offices and widespread crop damage. Bridges on Dragoon and 110 creek are washed out. 140 acres flooded two to three feet. Livestock losses include cattle hogs and horses. Families evacuated by boat or by horse. No lives reported.
Abilene Kansas May 30 reports the Smoky River not rising much only four feet above low water with the high level falling today and no damage reported.
War dispatches report renewed Japanese advance toward Kwan Tien from Saimatzen and patrol activity near Kin Chey. Kuropatkin notes unknown enemy numbers while Russian forces withdraw along the frontier and bombardments intensify around Kin Chow and Port Arthur remains a focal point of strategic planning amidst rains and heavy artillery.
President Roosevelt and party arrived by special train to Gettysburg Pennsylvania on Decoration Day. A crowd gathered at Penmar Park before the train proceeded to Reynolds Avenue and into the battlefield. Washington Memorial Day observances saw a large turnout at Arlington Cemetery with extensive floral tributes and a cavalry band.
Kansas May 30 report notes Standard Oil begins 116 mile pipeline from Sugar Creek to Humboldt connecting with main trunk line and extending through Missouri and Kansas. New York May 3. One man died and another may have perished when a fire started on the barge Affen and swept the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad line wreckage. Officials estimate the total loss at about one million dollars, with conservative figures ranging higher. Railway officials declined to release precise figures while investigations continue.
Osage area reports severe flooding with many bridges washed away and areas inundated. Names mentioned include Stanley Zabrada, Albert Olson, Lod Schrier, Wills Nichols, and others amid the rising water and damaged infrastructure.
