The Spanish Admiral fell for a ruse laid by American forces. The maneuver, designed to draw Spanish ships into a favorable position, exposed their vulnerability and altered the balance of naval engagement in the campaign.
Spanish warships sighted in Santiago harbor and Commodore Schley reports locating Cervera’s squadron there. The St Paul captured a coal ship sent toward Santiago. Heat is extreme, and U S ships prepare for possible invasion while debating blockading tactics and potential exits from the harbor.
The British cruiser Pique reports calm at Molly and Manila while the Spanish garrison at Del num has no defenses and foreigners are safe. Supplies reach Manila from the countryside. Spaniards fortify though guns are old and ammunition scarce. Rear Admiral Dewey informs Manila authorities he will hold them responsible for the captain’s life.
Dispatch from Key West reports General Gomez leading a cavalry and infantry force against Remedios, Santa Clara. Spanish reinforcements arrived as dawn broke, the Cubans capturing the town briefly, looting stores for provisions, rifles, and ammunition, before Spanish troops recaptured it two hours later with Cuban casualties.
Emershohn, a German subject posing as a newspaper correspondent, left St Thomas for Santa Cruz and Porto Rico in late May. He was arrested in Caguas, Porto Rico on May 26 but escaped. authorities there declared him a spy and set a price on his head. The German consul is reportedly unable to intervene.
In Toronto and across Ontario an extraordinary display of pro United States friendship and Anglo-Saxon unity unfolded. Over 2,000 attended Central Congregational Church services where Queen and McKinley portraits hung above pulpit and Union Jacks and flags adorned the hall. A letter from U S consul Colonel Sewell praised cordial relations, read with cheers. Resolutions urged closer ties to Britain and the United States, with songs of God Save the Queen and The Star Spangled Banner. A Massey Music Hall sermon by G Elieria urged federation of Britain and colonies to advance liberty and world trade.
Washington observed Memorial Day with broad ceremonies at Arlington and other cemeteries. Senator John M. Thurston delivered an oration praising fallen soldiers, linking their sacrifice to national unity and divine providence amid a renewed conflict with Spain. The day highlighted the blue and gray together, national flags, and a call to uphold liberty and patriotism across the republic.
President McKinley sends regrets that he cannot attend Gettysburg Memorial Day ceremonies. He praises the nation’s defenders and the enduring unity they inspire, urging a noble common destiny and continued gratitude to Civil War heroes and their descendants. The letter underscores national memory and patriotic duty across generations.
Memorial Sunday services were held at the First Presbyterian Church and North Baptist church. Memorial sermons were delivered by Rev. A. M. Reynolds and Rev. W. B. Hutchinson. The G. F. H. B. post led a parade to the church, with a quartet performing and prayers offered by multiple clergy.
At Gettysburg on Memorial Day Webster Davis assistant secretary of the interior delivered a speech urging a newer, higher nationality for the United States. He cited Alaska’s wealth and the promise of American steam, electric engines, and enterprise as key elements of progress.
