The Home Mission Societies held their tenth annual meeting at Saratoga on May 27. President Mrs J N Crouse of Chicago gave the annual address. There are 2184 auxiliaries, 1780 women and 395 children. One hundred fifteen new life members bring total to 1515. Receipts were 64120 with disbursements 62718 leaving a balance of 1419. Addresses covered junior work and young ladies work.

They condemned Sunday band concerts rail excursions and prize fights and urged action to curb baseball games and open cigar stores. The United States Supreme Court denied Eugene V. Debs and ARU officers a writ of habeas corpus, upholding circuit court authority over receiverships and injunctions in the 1894 railway strike case. The decision, read by Justice Brewer, affirmed federal sovereignty to enforce interstate commerce and mail delivery, and that the injunction did not bar criminal processes. The court stressed the government’s power to compel obedience to laws, even by military force if necessary.
