Manila reports Filipinos leaving for the United States to study the American Constitution. A serious fire broke out today in the Theitan tows district of Threety St. Johns. Fire authorities rushed to the scene but by 1 oclock flames were only partially under control. The fire destroyed thirty structures and many nearby buildings are at risk.
May 2 Emporia reports the death of Rosa David a 16 year old girl who killed herself after heartbreak. She lived with her father James David and was engaged to a prosperous farmer but he began visiting another young woman in the neighborhood. The girl died by her own action and was buried near Adlaire. In Cleveland Ohio May 2 C Buckley, president of the board of options, was removed from office by Mayor Parley amid charges of sales budget in office the mayor declined to specify.
Samoa May 17. The Samoan commission led by Bartlett Tripp and Baron Speck van Sternburg arrived May 12. First sitting May 18. discussions with Chief Justice Chimbere. Matanfa signals willingness to comply with the commission, but disarmament conditions remain. Loyalists fortified while rebels hold new positions. compensation claims arise from German subjects.
Twenty thousand people gathered in Pittsfield Alabama to hear William Jennings Bryan. A sunrise gun salute welcomed his arrival with a public reception at the Pittsfield house and at Congressman Williams residence. Bryan spoke in the afternoon urging income tax and free silver at sixteen to one and denouncing trusts.
